GEORGIA NETWORK TRAINING INSTITUTE
The Georgia Network began sponsoring a statewide conference in 1988 for institutions of higher education. The first three years were co-sponsored and partially funded by the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) and included information regarding employee assistance programs in addition to the alcohol and other drug prevention workshops. DHR funding was reduced and they were unable to continue to co-sponsor. However, the conference continued and developed into an annual event which came to be known as the Georgia Network Training Institute (GNTI) and has traditionally occurred the last week in February.
National speakers and trainers are brought in every February to provide the most recent research and information on evidenced-based alcohol and other drug prevention programming for the college population and the surrounding environment. Other GNTI presentations have included Program Development, Program Standards, Policy Development, Assessment, Grant Writing, Current Research, Drugs and the Adolescent Brain, Community Coalition Building, and Biennial Review Compliance. The Georgia Network has joined GNTI with the Georgia College Personnel Association (GCPA) conference since 2003.
The GNTI has established a long-term reputation of quality services and resources for implementing alcohol and other drug abuse prevention programs for all post-secondary institutions in the state. These programs and services are necessary for student retention and the creation of a successful learning environment. In the past few years, the GNTI has made an effort to help senior level administrators understand the importance of these programs and services.
Conference locations have included Savannah, Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Callaway Gardens, and Augusta.
